Looking back at a summer of fun at the Pembury Estate in Hackney

It was a summer to remember for young people at the Pembury Estate in Hackney.

The holidays saw young residents aged 10 to 19 participate in a range of sports, arts, and creative activities as part of a summer programme funded by not-for-profit housing association Peabody and Young Hackney, Hackney Council’s youth services.

Held at Pembury Community Centre, the local MUGA (Multi Use Games Area) and nearby Hackney Downs Park, activities included touch rugby, rounders, basketball, and cycling sessions, keeping young people active and social throughout the break.

For those looking for adventure, there were even opportunities to get out on the water, with kayaking and paddleboarding sessions provided by Leaside Trust proving a big hit.

Another highlight was a vibrant roller-skating jam in Downs Park, which brought the community together for a day of skating, music and movement.

The creative energy didn’t stop there. The programme also included dance workshops, cooking classes, a film project, cheerleading and more. Budding performers had a chance to shine at a talent show, showcasing the incredible range of skills within the local youth community.

To top it all off, there were several trips outside of Hackney, including a day trip to the seaside in Southend, for all the family.

Anslem Herelle, a youth coordinator at Peabody who ran the summer programme, said: “It’s been fantastic to see so many young people getting involved, trying new things and building friendships across the estate. We wanted to create a fun, safe space where young people could be active, creative, and feel part of something, and the response has been amazing. Whether it was roller skating, cooking, or just enjoying time outdoors, there was a real buzz of energy all summer long.”

One parent whose child attended the event said: “My son has really loved being in the centre, he’s enjoyed every activity and really looks forward to coming.”

Fun for under 10s too

There was plenty on for the younger kids too. A dedicated programme for children aged five to ten was delivered by Artburst

Artburst aims to enrich children's lives through creative education and the arts, helping them develop skills for both their academic and personal growth.

The Artburst summer playscheme was a SEND-friendly programme offering two weeks of fun, engaging activities, including music and movement, storytelling, and drama classes.

The programme was made possible by funding by a wide range of suppliers.

Term time

A programme of term time activities is now in full swing, which include regular youth clubs, football coaching, dance, roller skating and basketball at Downs Park.

In addition, Threads, a fashion and textile project, is taking place on Saturdays at the Pembury Learning Centre. Threads focuses on empowerment by teaching new skills that heighten aspirations, increase employability and raise self-esteem.
