London based artist Oliwia Bober was chosen out of 82 applications from artists around the world, following an open call.

She will now develop her initial design for the public artwork, with input from the local community, over the coming weeks.

We commissioned the project in partnership with arts organisation The Brixton Project. It called for a vibrant artwork that reflects the character of the area, including its communities, creativity and cultural heritage.

Artists were also asked to take inspiration from the wall’s unique structure to create something that feels rooted in Loughborough Junction. It needed to look appealing from both Higgs Yard residents’ homes and from a street view level.

Oliwia, a Polish illustrator and painter based in London, is known for her layered work exploring themes including identity, belonging and womanhood. Her approach, which brings together personal and shared experiences, stood out to the selection panel.

The artist was chosen by a panel including residents from Higgs Yard, local arts and community organisations, Lambeth Council, Peabody and The Brixton Project.

The next steps will see a series of community engagement activities which will give local people the chance to share their ideas, helping to shape the mural design.

The final design is expected by the end of June, with painting set to begin on site shortly after.
