£500,000 boost brings new North London Hospice unit closer to reality
We’ve converted a historic loan to North London Hospice into a £500,000 grant, helping bring their new inpatient unit in Barnet one step closer.

The original loan was given almost 40 years ago to help the hospice buy land and build its current 18-bed hospice for people with life-limiting illnesses. Our architects helped design that building in 1987. By turning the remaining loan into a grant, we’ve released vital funding for the hospice’s next chapter.
The hospice is raising £10.2m to build a new inpatient unit designed around modern palliative and end-of-life care. It will have larger rooms, each with their own adapted bathroom, and sofa beds so family members can stay overnight.
Anna Cooper, Director of Fundraising and Communications at North London Hospice, said: “We’re building for tomorrow. We’ve been supporting our community for more than 40 years and want to make sure we can continue providing the care that patients and their families need for another 40 years and beyond.”
The hospice has already raised more than two-thirds of the money it needs and is now focusing on securing the final funds so work can start in August. The new unit is due to open in July 2027.
Phil Day, our Chief Financial Officer, said: “We’re pleased to support the valuable work of North London Hospice and help with their plans for a new building.
“Working in partnership to support local communities, and particularly people who need extra care and support, has always been central to what we do, and we want to continue playing our part.”
North London Hospice receives referrals for more than 3,500 patients each year. Last year, 315 people were admitted to its inpatient unit. Its staff also made more than 21,000 visits to people in their own homes, and more than 1,300 people attended outpatient and wellbeing clinics.
As well as providing homes for 220,000 residents, Peabody provides care and support services to around 25,000 people across 26 local authorities. This includes services for young people in Lambeth, support for people affected by drugs and alcohol in Essex, and help for people sleeping rough in Essex.
